Earlier this summer, I decided that my 96 900S just didn't have enough power to satisfy me and I also wanted a slightly larger (passenger room) car so I went shopping on a whim. Saab's had always been my 2nd favorite car and I was looking to get back into a more powerful BMW so I went looking for a new 328i or a few other used BMW's. In performing my due diligence, I also looked at Acura TL, used MB C36, Lexus GS300, Audi A4, Volvo S70 T5 and a couple others. Really though, I wanted the BMW.
Of course, I also looked at Saab (and you know how this story ends). The 9-3 didn't excite me that much (I like them but as I said above, wanted a bit more passenger room). I test drove a 9-5 base and was left wanting (suspension and power were less sporting that I wanted). A 5 speed was a must (and eliminated a lot of the cars listed above) so that eliminated the 9-5 SE. The salesman talked me into giving the Aero a try even though I told him it was beyond my price range. Would you turn down a test drive??? Anyway, again on a whim, I asked for some lease/purchase figures. The financing rate on the 9-5 in a lease was so low that the deal was very very competitive with everything else I was looking at. Yes, it was a bit towards the high end of my range but was still VERY good.
I still love BMW's (hate the sterotype attached to them) for their RWD sports-car like handling but have certainly grown equally fond of Saab's. In my opinion, both are some of the best cars on the market. I've since decided that I missed the hatch on my old 900 that I sold so bought an 85 900 with very high miles that I tinker with (clutch replacement is in progress), commute in occasionally and use to haul stuff around. I'm really enjoying owning 2 cars. The next acquisition will probably be a late 80's 900 turbo convertible that has a good engine, transmission, body and top but needs some other labor intensive DIY type work (e.g. clutch, front end work, etc). Now 3 Saabs, the 9-5 Aero for 65% of the annual miles (including snows in winter), a 900 for hauling and winter driving and a convertible for summer - that'll be GREAT! I think my neighboors might be a little annoyed at 2 Saabs parked on the street but oh well. I suppose I should to get a house with a multi-car garage before I buy the convertible.
