9-3 rear gear sync problem, round 32

I read somewhere (but now can't find it) about a simple test for the rear sync: At a standstill, rev the engine a bit and then quickly (but gently) engage reverse.
If I do this, there is zero synchronization ... it's all grind. I'm not revving the car to 4000 (more like 2000) and I'm not jamming it into reverse AT ALL (just lifting the lock and moving it down). At idle, there's rarely a problem, but if the engine is rotating at anything above idle, the gears do not synchronize even though the shifter slips down as easy as a greased-up cat.
The dealer, who is normally terrific, claims there's no problem. But I have a 1996 Honda Civic DX which syncs fine, all the time.
Suggestions? I know this has been addressed here many times...thanks for any help you can offer.
