Is the sky falling?
So much fuss and despair over a "spy" photo? Though I'm not suprised, as the same pessimism was observed back when the "sharp angled" Saab 99 was introduced in the late '60's. That little 99 was scoffed at by Saabers who were adament that their rounded, smooth lined 95's - 96's were a perfected design. And while that cross-section wing design of the early fifties lasted for over thirty years, it was the 99 that brought Saab into the modern age and a competitor to European cars (a 1977 Saab 99 turbo would smoke a BMW 2002). The same pessimism happened again in 1979 when the 900 was introduced with "4 doors". Saabers complained that this oversized beast and increased production plans would mark the end. Same happened when the late 80's merger with GM and the introduction of th NG 900 in 1994 (ask anyone on the C900 board). And while the first year of each model change had bugs, the sales and fans continue to grow.
Regarding your hatch point, Saab has maintaned in recent articles that a hatchback will be available in addition to a sedan and wagon. O.K. Ferris?
For those who have already sworn off a car they haven't seen in person, test driven, or for that matter even been built... come out of your bomb shelters and give Saab a chance to show and prove itself.
As "Dinger" said, Saab has a new designer and goals for the future. That, combined with the new engine, is reason for optimism, not pessimism. Without understanding or remembering the past one is prone to panic and poor decision making when new things arise. I don't think GM has erased the memory of Saab's management nor will abandon Saab's heritage and inovative spirit.
Yes, the upcoming years can be critical for Saab, or any other (Ford) Car Company, but pre-judging and speculation accomplish nothing but unfounded fear. What's the worse that can happen? Saab/GM screws things up and your "forced" to keep your current Saab - poor baby!
So, is the sky really falling or are some of you afraid of change and the future?
Regards,
SS
