I had this done a couple of times on a BMW I used to have. A couple of times on the hood, and once on what seemed a major dent (dropped the bottom trunk end of a rather large Christmas tree there)in the area where the roof connects to the top of the fender behind the rear door. Had excellent results - never could tell where the tree trunk dent had been, even though I waited a year or two to get it fixed. I would strongly recommend exploring this option first to eliminate a dent. I think you'll usually be satisfied.
That said, your results will be best if (1) the paint has not been cracked or gouged and (2) the sheet metal has not been creased by the object which hit it. From the jobs I've seen, they actually use metal working tools on long rods and work the metal from behind. Therefore, it helps to have access to the surface via the edge of the door or the trunk or hood. Not sure how they would access the roof area you want worked, but it would definitely be worth exploring.
Good luck!
