If you do buy a 4x4 Jeep make sure to get the up country package and the Quadra drive. We had a 1999 without these and had several problems with the 4x4 system making nasty clunking noises. My inlaws have also experienced the same thing in their 1999 4x4. We finally got the dealer to give us a 2000 given the problems we had.
Important to remember that 1999 was the first year of the new model and I had one of the first of that run (bad idea I know). This might be fixed by now, but Jeep stated that the difference is the Quadra drive system and the up country package upgrade tightening the suspension (i.e. solve the nasty clunking noises). I wish they would have told me that when I bought it, but that is water under the bridge.
So....if you want the 4x4 that makes this a Jeep the truck of the year you need these "options". At a minimum the tires are better.
I also like the 4 Runner. The new ones look sharp.
