I sensed the same impact harshness that you're talking about. 99 9-3SE. I changed the springs to the Viggen springs and it got more harsh. The rear was stiff and the front would wallow.
I then put in the Eibach springs and Koni dampers. Huge difference. I personally don't like the Eibach springs because they seem too soft. They're about the same rate as stock but progressive. The Konis are seriously nice. They have that new valving that allows them to "give" more on the bumps for a smoother ride WITH more control.
Whatever... I think the Konis with your stock springs will be just fine. I agree that the stock shocks are overdamped, at least for compression damping. It's just a guess, mind you.
If you adjust the Konis stiffer, you'll find that it will be overdamped for rebound, especially with the Eibachs. How about regular Koni dampers vs the adjustable? I assume you won't be racing so they should be fine. Perhaps Monroe makes a sensatrack for the 9-3 now?
