My husband read a book called "The Motley Fool's Guide fo Finances"(or something like that). They had some interesting suggestions about dealing with car salespeople. They said to send out emails/faxes to all dealers within 100 miles with a complete description of what you want and tell them you are accepting bids for your business. We sent faxes/emails to all of these dealers in our area (Southern New Hampshire) and also Eastern Massachusetts. We only heard from the NH dealers. We got quotes ranging from 27,900 - 29,100. We had test driven the SE at the closest local Saab dealer, so we told him we were getting bids from local dealers, and did he want to give us one. His was 28,900 or something. The Motley Fool book said to contact the second lowest bidder and ask for a price $250 lower than the lowest bid. If they won't meet it, go with the lowest bid. We did this with the local dealer because we prefer not having to drive to Concord for maintenance. He met the price, so we are buying it. My husband travels a lot for work, so he didn't want to bother going to the dealer in person. Also, dealing via email/fax takes you out of their home field. Salespeople are trained in negotiating, but most regular people are not. We need all the advantage we can get.
If you want to go in person, the book suggests bringing 3 or 4 extra people, all with clipboards. Again, salespeople are trained how to deal with couples, with singles, etc. They are at less of an advantage if you throw them off a bit.
Edmunds.com said a good price for the SE with the options I wanted was $27,662. I figured that with the accessories I wanted $27,700 is good. I found edmunds.com the most helpful place for my shopping experience. It was at their town hall that I heard about TSN.
By the way, tax isn't a factor because NH has no sales tax. I am sure they are getting me somehow, but I believe it is for less than $200.
