When you first start the car after oil change, initial flow from the oil pump goes to fill the filter. This happens while the engine is turning over!!! So to reduce risk of wear due to poor lubrication, fill the filter as best you can - it's hard when it's horizontal but will save some wear on the engine. That said, bear in mind that modern lubricants should provide enough protection for the time lapse until the filter is full. Just better to take care and not be sorry later.
