Don't listen to this advice.
If wiping in a circle will cause swirls with what you're using, then wiping back in forth will cause marks too, they'll just be in a straight line. If you're using the right applicator and polish, then you will not swirl the paint. I have plenty of experience detailing cars in my past. I even got a chance to do Joey Kramer's of Aerosmith a couple of times. I was good.
Per the orbital buffer; it's the most idiot proof thing out there. Perhaps you were mistaking it with a rotary buffer? If so, then you're right. Orbitals are very gentle and great for polishing. They're padded so that you don't put too much pressure on any one part. They force you to use a nice soft terry cloth towel or one of the Meguire's foam pads. High speed rotary buffers should only be used by a trained professional. I didn't mean that. You'll burn and swirl your paint in an instant.
If you don't want to use an orbital, use a very soft terrycloth towel folded up a few times just larger than your hand. Use gentle pressure and an orbital motion. Make sure it's extremely clean too. A have an older Ralph Lauren towel strictly for wiping off wax that works quite well.
Also, if you don't like Meguire's products, which are great, you can use the 3M ones which also work well. You can probably only get those at an autobody supply store or equivelent.
