Even though I originally wanted the manual transmission, I got the automatic on my 2001 9-3 because I was impatient and needed a car, and to get the car equipped as I wanted it, only automatic was readily available. I too am a commuter (30 miles each way) a couple of days a week and am really pleased with the automatic transmission, especially in sport mode. It seems to shift smoothly and at just the right time (unlike the Infinity I-30t I had before this that often shifted really hard when pushed). There is no question that the manual would be fun once in a while for the fun factor, but day in and out the auto makes a lot of sense, and as far as automatic transmissions go, the 9-3 transmission strikes me as a good one.
