Yes....this is to distinguish it insofar as is possible from a brake light.
I don't know what all the fuss is about the earlier models. People don't seem to accept that autos are ALL better than they used to be in terms of sample defects in the first x miles.
JD Power is a clever market research firm which identified American dissatisfaction with having to take cars back to the dealer in the first few months to fix up little troubles, always under warranty. Saab rates well up in their survey.
To me, it's not the car's ability to send you back to the dealer under warranty that makes it a superior or inferior car; it's the safety/ integrity (quality of steel and design), long-life engines (Saab has extremely long-life engines); and stuff like rust resistance and hardiness and comfort of interior finish materials. This is what makes the car an attractive candidate for a refurbishment a few/many years out the piece. Take away any one of those factors and you have a junker whereas with a Saab, the temptation is always there to make it into a keeper.
