Sometimes the editors/testers with car magazines choose some weird competitors for their shootouts. Road and Track chose 6 competitors, including the Viggen (which came in last!). They chose a 3-series BMW (330), plus I think an Acura (3.2tl; was it type S?). Then they chose a 2.7t A6 Audi. This is weird. I don't see the 330i and the Viggen being competitors to the Acura 3.2tl and the A6; the latter two are "much" bigger than the former two. The BMW scored really high, and they thought the Saab was too expensive. But they actually tested a very decked-out bimmer and stated that they recommended taking off some of the non-performance options.
But, if they did this, then the bimmer would be basically stripped. If they leave all the stuff on, then it's easier to compare the Viggen and the 330i, because they are pretty equivalent in terms of options. If you do leave the price on, the realistic price difference between the bimmer and the saab is about 8 grand. That's quite a bit of money. Of course, they never mention this.
Anyway, some of the selections and ranking criteria of these magazines (or Edmunds) can be interesting.
