It's definitely NOT independent. That's where each wheel moves completely independent of the other. I was bloody shocked to find my father's '93 Geo was independent while my NG900 was not.
It's not rigid, because the beam is designed to twist, although it still looks rigid to a degree. It's a design tradeoff; it twists enough to give a some independence (thus 'semi-independent'), but is much cheaper and takes much less space than 2 more struts in the rear. (Damn bean counters...)
I think the true 'rigid' ones are usually RWD vehicles (these days usually trucks), where the axle can't be flexing because it's got the rear diff in it.
