The Gti 1.8T has a great motor that can easily produce 218hp with and exhaust, intake and ECU for about $1500. VW, puts a lot of similar features in their cars that compare to Saab.

However, a GTi is a GTi and a Saab is a Saab. They are not in the same class. If you're looking for cheap performance and bang for the buck, then get the GTi. If you're looking to get into a more elegant performer, then get the Saab. Both are enjoyable in their own way.
