Well, of course its a warranty issue, i does not have to be a widespread problem to be a warranty issue. BUT, some dealers may be bitchy and say it may need to actually break off to be considered broken. Mine, was stiff, and I told the dealer that it simply would not move and they repaired it. So, just have him tell the dealer that the knob is frozen and wont move and they should fix it.
Now, there are two ways of fixing it. Simply lubing the assembly may only be a temporary fix and it may get stiff again. This is what was done on my 9-3, but I have a lot of warranty left and can get it fixed the right way if it happens again.
The permament way is to replace the entire heater box assembly, but most dealers seem unwilling to do this off the bat as it requires removing the entire dash and is a time cinsuming job. However, as your friends warranty is nearing this end, this may be the way to go. If it breaks again out fo warranty, the repair could be expensive.
