You can get the MBC for about $35, a K&N drop in filter for about $50, and an exhaust for $300-400. This will allow you to adjust boost real close to the ~15psi fuel cut-off of the stock ECU. If you wanna go higher or if you feel the MBC is not safe for you, you can opt for the ~$800-1000 ECU upgrade, but you will still need the K&N filter and the exhaust.
I currently don't have my MBC dialed up as high as it can go, simply due to my driving style. The one bad thing about MBCs is that they are notorious for producing pressure spikes, so when you get on the gas hard from lower RPMs, the boost pressure tends to spike and then level off. The trick is to adjust the MBC so that the spike doesn't hit the fuel cut off, but still have pretty high boost when it levels off. Driving style affects the boost characteristics, so you have to tune the MBC to the way you drive. Maybe later, I'll turn up the boost a little and try again, but right now I can get the boost to go just about 1/3-1/2 into the red in almost any gear...including first and second (The stock ECU limits boost in these two gears). Hope this answers your questions.
