I asked my partner, the multi-engine jet pilot, about UK mechanics. I too was sort of under the impression they were (dare I say it?) more competent.
He said naaaaaaa. He said, in his experience, a good mechanic is a good mechanic is a good mechanic, no matter where he was trained or came from. Percy my Volvo mechanic was Hungarian.
Having said that, I'm happy Peter the Brit takes care of my Saab. The other Peter is a Canadian. Either Peter could chat your ear off about the car and each has gone through the rigorous Saab program, which is a "continuous improvement" kind of thing.
Point (d) has moved into Whitehall for resolution. Brits are FED UP with paying through the nose for cars and are NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! But I know what you mean.
Maybe a better UK initial inspection process can make enough of a difference to merit the #1 spot.
Cheers; John A.
