Well, after about a year of absence from Saab ownership, I'm back again with another car and on this board. Got a great deal on a '99 base 9-3 on a lease return. Must say it's nice to be back in one of these cars. I had a '99 Viggen before, but sold it mostly because the ride was too harsh for me. I was also annoyed by its wayward ways under power.
By comparison, this car is no Viggen, but it's not junk either. Sure, it doesn't quite go or corner like the Viggen, but it's no slouch in either department and has a much more supple ride. I missed the turbo rush, even though the GTI VR6 I previously owned had a great engine that was also a joy to listen to. But it was a bit small for my needs, and now I have 4 doors to boot.
No offense to Viggen or SE owners, but to me, the base model is where it's at for overall balance, ride, etc. And it exhibits very little of the camber steer that its more powerful brethren possess. It's what I should have bought in the first place, but I was influenced by the exclusivity of the Viggen and the driving school.
Took the car on a 1200-mile trip last week. I reset the computer in San Diego and drove to L.A. at speeds between 70-85. Was pleased that the computer read 32.4 mpg for the trip. Haven't reset it since then and have been averaging 27.4 for all types of driving.
