I can't comment on the SE automatic but I do know that my SE manual invoiced for $32,200 and I bought it for $32,700 - $5,000 incentive... Total price $27,700. I would guess that you should be looking at about $28,800 or so for the SE automatic.
In any case, you're right... That does take guts to not only hose you on the price but to keep some of the incentive for themselves. I think it's time to find a more reputable dealer... and I would not be afraid at all to tell them why.
I had an incident like that once with a Ford dealer... after they pitched a completely unreasonable quote I turned around and explained to them that I knew they were pitching a raw deal - gave them numbers to back my story up and then went on to say it is for that reason I am not buying my car from them. Jaws hit the floor.... and I later received a letter of apology from the sales manager.
Many dealerships have also not caught up to the times in the world of Internet sales. The internet makes it very easy for us, as consumers, to find out what things are worth and to comparison shop... making their job much more difficul and forcing them to find ways to up their customer service in areas other than just a good price. The dealership I bought my SAAB from is the epitomy of this... They pitched a good deal because they knew I had done my reasearch and they knew what was out on the net. In addition to a good deal, they also have a state of the art service facility and top notch customer care... that is what makes you want to return.
On the flip side some unsavvy sales managers who do not have a full grasp of the information that is on the net or understand Internet sales quotes often end up losing business - as in this case - by trying to take advantage of a medium (the Internet) that they do not have a full understanding of.
