Have to agree with Ed, the car looks much better [better proportion, less 'air' around the tyres] with 17s on but yes they are more prone to damage: a friend of ours bent the rim pretty badly on a 17" wheel on his 9-5 while we were out on a saab club drive in the country on some fairly twisty, hilly backroads in Northern New South Wales.
It cost him about AU$150 to get it rolled out but it was like new.
IMHO the 9-3 convertible needs a little help in the ride/handling department: mine does! It came with 15s shod with Michelin Pilots and it's all too soft, especialy those tyres, I much prefer Bridgestone RE711s. The ride is OK on smooth roads and jiggly on uneven, so if it's jiggly anyway you'll likely really enjoy the improvement on the the smooth twist bits. I don't kno about you but I forgive my ragtop a few things because I like it so much, a little extra harshness on uneven roads for better handling would be the way to go.
Have you considered aftermarket wheels, or will they invaalidate your warranty?
The dashmounted cupholder needs the radio taken out [with a special tool] to fit. For about 30 quid [AU$75 out here] it fills a blank bit on the dash!
