The fluid is a Synthetic labeled as a Saab fluid. Whether you replace or not is a matter of how long do you want the car to last? If you are going to sell the car after 5 years, don't worry about it. If you are going to drive it until the last stop is the recycler, then you should probably replace the fluid AT SOME TIME.
How often? Welllll that's a good question. I have a NG900 and changed the regular dino oil based fluid at around 70k miles. The fluid was dark but was still in pretty good shape, it looked no worse than the engine oil when I change it.
Fluid choices: a bunch. I used Redline MTL, after a week the tranny shifted a little more smoothly. The Saab fluid is a good choice as well. Synthetic Motor oil would work very well. Gear oil would also work. One note on gear oil ( at least back in the day), once you install it you need to replace it with gear oil when you change the fluid. Don't go back to engine oil based lubricants!!!
Procedure: The NG900 Haynes manual discusses how to change the fluid. You could also search the archives for the procedure. I think it is in the NG900 section. I
