I have a 2000 9-3 base model with manual transmission and I have had the Saab sliding armrest for about 10 months now. I like it a lot and have found that it does not get in the way of shifting unless I slide the top all the way forward. Most of the time I have it slid out about half way and that is fine for resting my right arm and for shifting.
As for the cupholder issue, you could fold the sliding armrest cover back to expose the cup holder, but the sliding armrest is larger and more bulky than the standard cover making that process cumbersome. (Also if you store anything in the small storage compartment under the sliding armrest, stuff will rattle around as you tilt the cover back to get to the cup holder.) As a result, I have resigned myself to using the cupholder in the dash. I got a travel coffee mug with a tapered base that fits in the holder and also has a lid which is pretty spill-proof. I have just learned to be very careful taking the travel mug in and out of the cup holder since it is so flimsy. Not the best solution, but it works for me.
