I was in the same situation... learned when I was in my teens and then didn't have the opportunity to do it again until I was in my late 20s... when I bought my '01 9-3 SE. People said "That's a hell of a car to learn on." but the fact of the matter is, you'd be surprised how quickly it comes back to you. If you were good at it back then, you shouldn't have a problem with the 9-3. Surprisingly, the transmission is pretty forgiving and the friction points are very predictable... especially since everything is hydraulic now and there are no clutch cables, etc.
As far as practicing... other than finding a willing friend to help you out... maybe a co-worker... you may consider finding an old beat up Ford Escort or something like that with a 5 speed. :-) hehe I don't think the rental companies keep manuals around at all anymore... too much of a liability for them.
