I agree with the ground clearance, I live at 2600' elevation in California and only have to drive 8 minutes up the mountain to hit the snow line. However, studded tires won't be practical if someone is just visiting Tahoe and lives outside the mountains in CA - you really only need chains when crossing the Donner summit and some of the less used roads in Truckee and around the lake, they do a good job of plowing the busier ones.
