Starting with the NG900 all the different gauges are run by a processor/computer. Instead of in the old days when a wire was run from the sensor to the gauge the wire in todays cars is going into a computer that calculates and decide which gauge is going to get the signal.
You still have the chances of a thermostat being stuck or wide open but that usually don't get the gauge needle to freeze in min or max position.
I have replaced a couple of computer boards on NG900 where it was everything from dashlite problem to turbogauge/tempgauge problem.
