Today I brought the Viggen into the shop and had a go at reproducing the sound with one of the SNN technicians in the car. At first, the technicians was blaming the problem on something to do with a valve and the ACC. After a mile or so of stopping and starting, he finally gave in and reluctantly agreed that it was the throwout bearing. This will be replaced under warranty, and while the transmission is out, I'm having the clutch opened up to inspect the life left in 'er. That will cost a half-hour worth of labor, but that's all that I'll have to shell out.
I definitely got the feeling that the technician knew what the problem was and tried to convince me that there wasn't a problem. I dunno if I should expect anything less, since warranty work probably doesn't make the garage happy, but that's why they're in business - to do the work whether there's 9 miles on the car or 9 miles left until the warranty expires. I'd just appreciate it if they would be more "on my side" once and a while. Had I done what they asked, I would be driving around until just after 50,000 miles before I rolled back into the shop for the grim verdict.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this post. I am a more knowledgable Saab owner thanks to the benefit of your collective experience. I was well-armed and informed this morning, which really is the key to dealing with situations like this.
