This happened to me last week. But it was easy to fix.

The single bulb has two fillaments within it -- one is for the "tail light" function, and the other, brighter fillament is for the "brake light" fillament.

In order for the bulb to work correctly, the bulb has to be properly seated in its socket, so that each fillament will be connected to the proper contact. To do this, you must turn the bulb ALL THE WAY after you insert it into the socket.

When I installed the replacement bulb the first time, I only turned it until the first "detent," and continued to get the "Brake Light Failure" message. Later, when I turned the bulb the rest of the way, it worked properly.
