Head gaskets can last forever. But an aluminum head on an iron block has a limited life. The head moves relative to the block with every thermal cycle. This is of course only worse in colder climates. The head gasket cannot last forever with this constant massaging and shearing. What is required is an aluminum block with dry or wet iron cylinder sleeves. Then the sleeves can be optimised for alloy and grain structure. More expensive!!! The Volvo PRV 2.8L 6 cylinder engine was like this, floating wet cylinders only secured at each end. Very smooth and lighter too.
