Ray,

I have a 2001 9-3SE with 15K miles and can't imagine what grinding noise you are hearing. The drive train is very quiet, perhaps there is more wind and road noise than some of the competition, but not enough to bother a driving enthusiast.

As far as the sluggish steering, one thought comes to mind. I found the 9-3 base to be very much softer (I think more shocks than springs) than the SE in my test drives and it leans quite a bit before taking a set in a turn. The only downside of the SE is a bumpy ride in the city, but some don't mind. Try an SE if you have not. Also there has been mention on this BB of leaking rear shocks on 99 models, perhaps this is an issue with your test car.

I love the turbo rush, but until you get used to it you can get caught when the power jumps 50% a second after you reach a given throttle position. The Saab is a car that takes a while to drive skillfully, but that is part of the appeal.

It seems than handling is your main concern. Let me suggest taking a Viggen for a ride to demonstrate what the chassis is capable of when optimized for handling. If you find that the front wheel drive effects are not a problem, then I believe you can tune even a base model with appropriate springs and shocks to get the same level of handling at a reasonable cost, as have others writing on this BB.

Anyway, let me give you one piece of advice - don't buy any car unless you really love it even though the price is right. You spend the money once, but will have to drive it every day.

Mitch
