Instead of trying to gradually replace the fluid, by draining half and refilling with synthetic, do a complete trans mission flush with synthetic. It costs a little more than a drail/fill, but almost all of the fluid will be replaced in one shot. When I was pricing the trans flush/fill for another car I had, it was about $30-40 dollars more expensive to completely flush the system and then refill it as opposed to just draining and filling, which only removes part of the fluid.
