With so many variables who can really say? In my 26 years of selling new cars I've never heard of a non break in issue, that is anything ever being blamed on not breaking in some thing gently enough. I've heard the opposite from speed demons. Break it in like you're gonna' run it, hard.
Road test magazines seem to notice a car gets faster after 5,000-10,000 or more miles. So how does that relate to the 600-700 miles you describe to seat the rings? I've heard 9-5 SE V6's get peppier at around 20,000 miles.
What is truly going on? The owners manual barely mentions break in. Saab is the only car that has a 30 day service, but a bet'cha they don't change the oil at that time. Don't run at a steady speed, vary your speed....I guess I don't live in a place that's flat and straight and unpopulated enough for that to matter. Of course a manufacture is going to recommend a gentle break in, but does it really hurt anything not to? Some of the quickest cars I've driven get the snot driven out of them by their owners. If I break in my car hard so that it runs great will it not last 250,000 miles if I really take care of it? I hear Porsche 911's run 250k between rebuilds. Are you saying that 911's don't get driven hard? I can't imagine that. So seldom today do you do a classic rebuild on any vehicle, you know, rings, valves, mains and rods. Usually it's some goofy accessory, pump, or gasket, or the cars falls apart around the drivetrain. Nothing particularly wears out at 100,000 miles anymore. Lot's of cars with 250,000 plus miles if owner is diligent and it's a decent car to start with, like a Saab.
Does anybody really know?
