I had a 1988 900T, bought in 1990, and kept for 4 years. I really loved it, probably more for its "character" than its outright performance, although the performance was fine. I've been without a Saab since then. So I can't give you the same comparison impressions a current 9-3 owner could.
Over the past year and a half or so, I've hemmed and hawed about getting a new 9-3. I've test driven them several times, borrowed one for a weekend trip, and I really like them. I'd wanted a base model coupe, 5-speed, cloth seats, no sunroof. Just the basics because it was all I thought I could reasonably afford, and all I really need. And of course, I waited too long, as both the "base" model and the coupe (except the Viggen) are a thing of the past. Still, I know I could find a nice, low mileage used one at a great price with a little searching. However........
Lately, I have found myself missing that old 900T. With the release of the "all new" 9-3 (or whatever they call it)just a few months away, along with the supposed demise of the hatch (at least at initial launch), I find myself wanting a Classic 900T 2-door hatch once again. Something to tinker with and hopefully enjoy for a long time. In most objective ways, the 9-3 is a better car. But I do miss the styling, feel and character of that old model. Maybe I'm looking back through rose-colored glasses, since I haven't driven a Classic 900 in several years. So I'll have to reacquaint myself with them again. But I've now decided (at least I think I have)to purchase a less expensive car(leaning towards a Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon for around $20k or less)as a reliable, daily driver and patiently look for a clean, Classic 900T (1990 - 1993). Straying off topic for a bit, I drove a WRX Wagon while looking at an Outback Sport, and it was real blast to drive. Not as refined as a Saab, and Subaru doesn't manage turbo lag as well as Saab, but none the less, that WRX was still an absolute blast. Damn. There are so many choices out there.
