A friend of mine has a new (2001) M3. Took him 16 months to get it and I have to admit it is stunning performance-wise. However, it's not a practical car price-wise (for me at least). Anyway, after about a week he had to limp it back to the dealer for a back-ordered warranty fix - didn't get it back for another week. So, during that time he had a 330i as a loaner. I checked it out and the interior is extremely underwhelming for a $42-45000 car. The M3 interior is rather pedestrian as well. My feeling about BMW's is that you really have to fall in love with the engine and handling, but if the interior comfort and style means anything to you, it's not worth the money (unless money is no problem for you). I will admit that the guy I used to carpool with in high school had a mint 2002 that was very nice, and a BMW before the yuppies caught on - I'd drive that car today if I had it. However, my $33000 Viggen makes me very happy, interior, exterior, and performance.

In Atlanta cars seem to be a huge status symbol (says a lot about Atlanta in general, though folks do spend a lot of time in their cars with the traffic and all), and I'd say BMW's are probably a close 3rd to Accords and Camrys as far as prevalence (not including gas guzzling SUVs, don't get me started). Some day when I win the lottery or rob a bank, perhaps I'll order my custom built M5, but until then I think you can't beat Saab for price, performance and luxury. Too bad your boss can't see the seats in my Viggen!
