Saab has required the transmission to be in reverse to remove the key for many years. There are some obvious benefits to this design decision. Assuming the car may be in reverse when it is cranked you have two choices:
1. Omit the clutch interlock - if car is left in reverse car jumps when starter is engaged, possible damage but car probably doesn't start, motion is limited.
2. Include the clutch interlock - if car is left in reverse and the car is started with the clutch depressed, when clutch is released the car really launches and could really take off if it doesn't stall.
Scenario 1 is the lesser of two evils.
I have cranked my car once in reverse, but never again, fortunately no damage. Unfortunately other drivers of my car may need to learn the hard way.
There is a really simple solution: Don't allow the car to crank in reverse or perhaps only in neutral. The downside: Allowing the car to crank in first (or reverse) can be a lifesaver if you are stuck in a dangerous place and need to move the car a few feet in first gear on the starter. I think locking out the starter in reverse is the best solution and can easily be implemented with a simple wiring change.
