It depends on the different deals. Don't get caught up in the money factor bullcrap. Find out what they are charging you for the car itself, what the various interest rates are, and what the residual value is for a lease, and then compare. Your mileage/year may impact your decision as well.
I leased the car -- same price whether I leased or bought. It lowered the payment versus a 60 month loan. I expect to buy the car at the end of the lease, and the interest rate on the lease was 4%. To me this is the best of both worlds if you can pony up the cash at lease-end, which is a pretty big chunck. Yes, I bought just before the economic downturn and could kick myself for not waiting a few more months. Probably cost me $5K. That's why you don't see 0%, or a huge discount. I only got a couple grand off.
DCJ's lease numbers don't quite add up in my head, not sure though. I don't think that a $37K car with $5K down would yield a $601 payment unless they had a residual of 40% or less. I probably paid $6K more, $3K more down and have a total lease payment with taxes of $100 less.
Anyway, I will buy at lease-end and hopefully get a lower buyout price than residual.
Are you going to keep this car longer than 4-5 years?
The convertible is AWESOME. Rigidity sucks, but its pretty big for a convertible.
Make sure to get the windscreen with the purchase. Makes a huge difference. It's probably good for another 10-15 degrees and for me it has probably increased the top-down usage by 40-50%. A must have.
