I understand why you say depreciation is not a factor, but it really is, for the simple reason that cost is a factor. If he keeps the cars until it's dead, the new one will depreciate 24K, and the used one 15K.

So if he is going to keep the car unti it's dead, the question becomes will the extra warrantee periood, lower miles, and possibly greater reliability of an '02 be worth the extra 9K he is paying?

If it's going to be his only car, I say go with the new. In my case, my wife got a new 01 9-3 for that reason, but I'm still tooling along in my 95 Jetta GLX with 100K miles. As long as we have one car that is good for long trips...
