Having owned a 145, 2 245's, 740, 9,40 and still have a '94 855M w/ 242,000 miles, I'd say I'm a bit of a diehard Volvo owner. OK, I also had a '81 900T years ago. So why did I get the 9-3 Viggen....value, and the fact that in '99 Volvo brought no sticks in on any of the turbo models.

With 242k on the 855 odometer, including original wear items such as clutch, exhaust, tie rod ends, etc I think it is a fabulous product. I do all my own maintenance and the cars are very user friendly and I think pieced together very well for modern cars. But the pricing on Volvo's is in the stratosphere nowadays. The good thing about the Volvos up here in New England is re-sale value. Saabs have a much lower re-sale, but you pay less up-front for them.

I'd say the 9-5 compares more evenly to the newer V70's. While the 9-3 is a cut above the S and V40 series.

9-3 has good utiliy space, drives well (although a tad rough)and has plenty of pep. I actually like having the cargo hold concealed most of the time rather than my wagon into which everyone can see. I still don't trust the Saabs as much mechanically, though I have no reason to say that as my Viggen is just about at 50k with nary a burp yet. The gearing in the Saabs is really nice for highway driving. I get 30+mpg in the Viggen on highway. 3000 rpm is 85mph!

Best value out there today, IMHO are the '99 9-3's coming off lease. They can't give them away.

You'll like the Saab, but probably for some different reasons than the Volvo. Bottom line, they're both good. Actually, compared to cars of 10 years ago, they're both great.
