leak a little bit of oil from the left/front area of the engine. Sometimes it is the valve cover that is leaking and it slowly finds its way down the side of the engine,and sometimes it is the plugged hole in cyl head ( where the ignition distributor use to be) that is seeping a little bit. Or it could be from the headgasket where the oilreturn galley is.

That's where the politics of a dealer comes in, they can't just replace anything on a whim, the mechanic have to answer to the foreman and he in turn have to answer to the shop owner and so forth.

Sometimes Corporate Saab comes out with a statement saying that a certain amount of seeping is allowed, just so the shops everywhere doesn't replace parts unnecessary.

The left/front area of the 4 cyl engine have been prone to leak ever since that type engine/headgasket was introduced way back in the 80's. But it takes a long time before it gets really bad.

What's makes it more difficult in your case is that they have had several headgasket problems in the late 90's due to under torqued head bolts, but I have not been able to find out if it is a certain year/years only. Or if it is because of a new style head bolt that was introduced in 97.

At 41K miles it is, like they say, a hit and miss to retorque the headbolts, it might get worse. And they might want to hold you off until the warranty is gone, and they can charge you instead.

Try to talk to Saab USA and see if maybe they will push for it.
