I agree totally. I've learned to drive on a manual, and mostly drove manual cars for the last 10 years in heavy Toronto traffic (and now in MI, mostly highway). I swore I'd never buy an auto for myself. However, after driving the auto and manual 9-3 SE back-to-back, I would pick the Auto for the following reason:
Auto good: Smooth gear shifts, good in heavy traffic, very peppy in S-mode, anyone else in my family can drive it.
Auto bad: lower fuel economy, will get critized by "purist drivers".
Manual bad: Clutch is very close to brake pedel, stupid safeguard on reverse gear, resale value, wife can't drive it.
Manual good: $900 cheaper (employee price), wife can't drive it. ;-)
In short, I think with 200hp, smooth shifting, and a sport mode to satisfy times when I want to drive a bit more "spiritedly", I think the auto transmission in the Saab 9-3 is definitely a good option.
