Not sure about the headlight, but in regard to the windshield its the stress that is different these days versus the older cars. Windshields are now part of the body structure; that's why they are glued in and not just retained by the rubber moldings. In fact, they are also part of the SRS system designed to retain the air bags when the persons' head goes into the bag.
Anyway, as they are now under stress due to body twist, etc. an impact is more likely to create a ding or if toward an edge, a crack. Where I live and due to the sand and gravel used during the winter, I replace a windshield about once a year. All thanks to the glass being designed as part of the body structure instead of just a piece of glass.
