only for merging from an onramp...? Posted by Robin [Email] (#2944) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Robin) on Sun, 9 Jun 2002 22:28:12 In Reply to: Re: I got some miles!..., Dave, Sun, 9 Jun 2002 21:20:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
i don't think so... first of all, if Sport Mode was only to be used in a 'limited' way, i'm pretty sure there would be language to that effect in the owners manual (i haven't seen it)... second, modern computer controlled transmissions are a distant cousin to the original "hydromatic" push-button transmissions that some mechanics still confust them with...
selecting Sport Mode does two things... first, it changes the down-shift points, so the engine revs to a higher RPM before down shifting (can't see how this would hurt the transmission)... second, it changes the computer control of the turbo unit so that it spools 'faster' (not in terms of time, but the engine load at which it starts to spool up)... again, i can't see how this would hurt the transmission...
i had an old toyota camry (which also had an Asain-Warner(sp) transmission, the just like the Saab) which was electronically controlled, too, and it had three shift programs... economy, normal, and power... the camry didn't have a turbo (grin), but the shift programs did control the shift points of the automatic transmission... i drove that car in Power mode until it got stolen at 140,000 miles... never a hitch...
bottom line (for me), the good thing about Sport mode is that the car feels more powerful and responsive (and so its more fun to drive, and i feel like i'm in better control)... the bad thing about Sport mode is that it burns more gas...
Sport On!
(and happy motoring)
