My thoughts for you. I own 2, 01 base 9-3s(auto). I test drove an 02 9-3 SE 5 sp and the 02 Viggen this afternoon. I'm looking to replace one of the base models for me. I would like the sportier suspension, engine, 5 sp , ei ei o. The SE is a great deal for the price. "Sportiness" is more than acceptable for a daily driver. It has a "quicker" feel than the auto tranny(although S mode is much fun), more sure footed with the suspension and larger wheels/tires. I too fell in love with the Viggen. However, it costs over 10k or more than the SE(depending on the deal you can get). It has all the positives you read about (power, drop dead looks, brakes...) The drawbacks I see (compared to the SE.) The "price to fun ratio" doesn't add up. If you took the money you saved on the SE and spent just half on upgrades, you would have the performance of the Viggen (although it's still not a true Viggen). Also, if you drive on any roads that are halfway bad for more than a few miles, I think you will quickly tire of the ride. It is not harsh, but for family or distances, it will get old (unless you and your family are used to riding with this type of suspension). The 17" wheels also seem to have more complaints about bending vs. other wheels I've read or heard about. Very few times will you get to "use" all of that extra power a Viggen has. Put your foot in it and you will quickly find yourself beyond most legal speeds very quickly. Bottom line: SE has great performance for price. The Viggen is awesome, but that all comes at a significant price and may not be the best choice if overall comfort is a big factor. Hope this helps. Any choice you make will be good as they are all Saabs.
