The VW TDI owners have similar issues with the air mass meters. They get a thin oil film on the sensor element. They use plastic safe eletrical parts cleaning sprays to clean them. The element must not be touched and the spray must not be of a type that leaves a lubricating film.
Sounds like yours was quite off, more than a contamination issue.
Do you have exhaust gas recirculation in your TiD's? The VW intake manifolds can get quite carboned up with crankcase gases plus soot from the exhaust. The intake can get restricted resulting in a loss of power.
