I have to laugh every time oil-change interval comes up on these boards. It's cheap insurance...when in doubt, change it!
In my 2000 9-3 owner's manual it also says that the oil change interval should be shorter than 10K if you're doing stop-and-go city driving, short trips, etc. In fact, it provides space for "extra" oil changes in the maintenence record booklet.
In my opinion you would have to be a *very* gentle driver to really go 10K miles without changing semi-synth oil.
I think the move toward longer intervals is partly better oils, partly tighter manufacturing tolerances and finishes, but mostly an attempt by manufacturers to decrease the cost-of-ownership, especially in the case (as for my 2000 SE) where dealer-provided maintenence is included for the first few years. They just don't want to see you every 3 months/3000 mi.
I change every 5000 mi with Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W-30 and a premium filter ($5-$10). That's probably more often than technically necessary, but like I said: cheap insurance.
