Well, I've had the generic white smoke from the exhaust for about two months. It was today however, that the smoke started pouring out. I parked the car and started it a few minutes later. No smoke, but after about 30 seconds the usual returns, but not to the extent it was earlier. I had only been driving the car for 2 minutes when it originally happened.
Startup was normal, but seemed to turn over an extra time. There is a smell coming from both the engine bay and exhaust, which is similar to a burning clutch (I have an automatic). I smell more gasoline in the exhaust than usual. There is no loss of power or any drivability issue. In fact after it "cleared" it returned to normal, but the burnt clutch smell is still lingering in the exhaust.
At first I thought it was the turbo, but I had no turbo whine and the smoke was white not blue/gray. I have a feeling it's the head gasket. I was one of the cars with the tightened 8 bolt about 15k miles ago, so this would make sense. Coolant is full, no signs of leak. Oil is not milky and coolant looks normal.
Tomorrow I am going to run a compression test and check the plugs. Is there anything I need to know specifically about compression testing a car with direct injection? I am just confused because there are no cels, and in the past I've noticed the T-5 will run a cel for anything.
My brother, a mechanic, thinks if the compression test checks out all right, I should fill it up with gas because of the possibility of a bad bad batch and start driving it. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
