I have experience with the K&N filter in five different cars that I have owned over the years. Currently, I have a 99 9-3SE convertible and a 96 9000CS both having the K&N filters installed. What I have noticed with every car that I have owned, each one experienced better throttle response off-the-line as well as better gas mileage. Average increase in mpg is approximately 1 mpg. Installation is very simple with the 9-3 being that the access point to the filter uses quick release hooks on the airbox that are readily accessible. The 9000CS was much more difficult to install for comparison. In both Saabs, response is quicker at the expense of a little more wind noise rushing into the airbox. You will only notice this during hard acceleration. Other than that, the K&N filters are near bullet-proof. I still have one on another car that has been in use for over nine years so far and still looks brand new. Hope this helps.
