I had a problem that I thought was the idle valve. My car's RPM's would drop down to about 400 then jump back up to normal and cycle like this every 15 seconds. Whenever I took it to the dealer they could never find the correct cause. This problem persisted for 2.5 years!!
They found a broken barbed connection they replaced (replaced under warranty(what was odd about this is there had been silicone goob used earlier on it to try and patch it)). They thought it was the DI and had the TECHII hooked up and it reported a misfire on 3 (replaced under warranty). They cleaned the throttle body and a few other misc things. The problem still happened. One day after coming back from a 100 mile trip, the car stalled out on an off ramp while waiting for the light to change. This problem was also more frequent when I let the fuel get extremely low and then refuel.
The solution? It ended up being a canister (charcoal?) air intake. All the other symptoms were problems with the fuel sensor getting false readings on a 5 dollar part.
