The italian hoagie probably did it. As Eddie Murphy said, "Don't fall for the banana in the tailpipe trick".
I'd also look at the ignition wires and starter relay wiring. Some punks probably had a good old time at your expense. Have you pissed anybody off in your neighborhood recently?
I'm sure that something proceeded the Italian hoagie being shoved up the exhaust pipe. Take a plumbing snake up the tailpipe and carefully give it a good cleaning.
How the hell did they get the hood open? Did you leave your hood release open or the doors unlocked?
Sounds like it's time for a really loud, obnoxious car alarm with motion sensors that wake up all the neighbors when it goes off. Surprised that the factory car alarm never went off.
BTW, make sure you call the police and your insurance company, and also take pictures of the damage.
