I've got a 2001 5-door, black-on-black. I bought it with 300 miles on it very late (12/1/01) in the year - it had been test driven and in the salesroom for a while.

I've now got close to 16K miles and these are the only problems I've had:
- squeak in left-front suspension on speed bumps - "fixed" by dealer at 10K free maint with retorque of suspension but sound returned quickly though not as bad as originally.
- back console plastic (mid cupholder door is attached to it) came loose, was fixed at 10K service but has recently become unattached again.
- creaky driver door window when partially rolled down or when just rolled up completely - never complained to dealer
- "click" in driver door (near lock) only occuring when starting from a dead stop, or coming to a dead stop at a light or stop sign - never complained to dealer
- left rear door handle would at times not open the door - repaired at 10K maintenance, no problems since
- a few times the transmission has been IMPOSSIBLE to get into 1st gear until the car rolls a fraction of an inch, but not frequently enough to let the dealer take the transmission apart. Transmission is notchy but not as bad (IMO) as some make it out to be
- squeak in rear seat hinge, probably fix that myself

Since I haven't really given the dealer an opportunity to fix a lot of these things they're pretty easy to forget. Nothing has made me not love the car just like I did when I first got it. IMO the 3 series is a great car, but optioned like the Viggen would have been way out of my price range, and so it came down to being the best Euro sports car package for the money, and not even close price-wise to the nearest competitors at what it was being offered for. I'm also a confessed turbo addict after my first '98 900SET, so that didn't hurt!
