I've had a traumatic experience because of this head gasket issue. (Search 'gasket' under my name) Putting two and two together in retrospect; check the following:
1) dark mess around front of engine - indicates oil seepage (usually minor, as with a slow leak)
2) chemical smell in cabin means something is cooking in the engine bay - usually a more serious leak
3) Need to fill coolant often is a bad sign; either the coolant's going into the oil line (really bad headgasket like me), or you've got a coolant system leak which will lead to overheat, and then headgasket failure. Of course, may cooling system probs are minor, from leaky hose/reservoir to new water pump. If you have any such minor cooling sys problem, fix it ASAP.
4) White residue in oil is the worst - you've got coolant/water in your oil. If you're lucky, you can save the engine, turbo, etc. by flushing the oil system several times, and by removing, resurfacing the head and replacing the headgasket. If you're unlucky, the coolant/oil gunk will break down one or more bearing seals, causing total mechanical engine failure. The chance of this increases if the car overheats for too long.
Just some notes - hopefully other head gasket challenged folks can learn before its too late.
